A river cruise holiday is the perfect solution for anyone who is looking for a unique perspective on some of the world’s most beautiful places, where you can simply relax or explore depending on what you decide to do when you wake up in new surroundings.
What to look for in a river cruise
This gentle and serene form of travel is becoming an increasingly popular way of seeing the natural beauty of a country or indeed a continent in a relaxed and often elegant environment. A river cruise holiday offers a unique pleasure to travelers with ever changing scenery and breathtaking vistas to hold your attention and even capture your imagination. You often feel that you are in the very heart of the region that you are gliding your way through and tend to see a town or city from a vastly different perspective when viewed from the waterways rather than on foot. River cruises offer you the perfect opportunity to explore a larger area of the region that you are traveling in than would normally be possible if you were staying at a hotel and exploring on foot.
Where to go
River cruises are available on all the major European rivers including the Rhine, The Seine, The Danube and The Douro. For a complete contrast you could consider cruising along the ancient Nile River and taking in the temples and pyramids of Luxor and Karnak or maybe even consider exploring the vast continents of Russia and China.
Preparing to travel
In order for you to gain maximum enjoyment from your cruising holiday there are a number of important things to consider before you actually embark on your journey. Depending on where you are traveling in the world you would be advised to research the region and take advice from your travel agent or provider as to whether there are any restrictions or visa requirements to consider as well as noting any immunisation needs if you are outside of Europe and especially if you are considering a more exotic location such as Egypt and the Nile. Your cruise operator should provide a good guide as to what you need to do before you leave home so that there are no last minute problems or worst of all, you are unable to leave the boat on a particular stop if you have not prepared any relevant documentation that is required locally.
Life on board
It is always a good idea to consider the area that you are visiting and indeed the boat that you will be staying on for the duration of your holiday to see what sort of clothing and other items you may need to bring with you in order to make your stay and overall holiday as enjoyable as possible. If you are visiting a number of different regions even in the same country, you may find that the climate is quite different from one day to the next, so take advice from your tour operator as to what clothing you need to take in order to be comfortable on board and also dressed appropriately from a weather and cultural perspective when you leave the boat in order to explore the local area.
It is always worth taking the time to research your trip before you go, including having the right currency in advance as well as making sure that you have all the right clothing and equipment relevant to your trip together with any supporting documentation needed. Spending a little time with research and preparation before you travel will make the river cruise even more enjoyable and allow you relax and take in the beautiful sites in comfort.

I’m planning to go on a cruise this summer on the Danube and Ireally don’t know what to do with the life on the board. But now I’m making a research of all the places that I’ll visit and check out what are their climate at that time of the year. I think that it’s a good idea to ask someone who lives ther or find information in Facebook or Twitter (there are numerous groups about different places). Reagarding the life on the boat my brother was on a cruise and he told me that I have to get used to small spaces and strong wind.. but it doesn’t really matter asl long as I’m having fun.. thanks for your tips.
