APD July 2011 Polling Data

1. Asked which of these countries do you think has the highest rate of flight tax:

  • 53% thought UK has the highest rate of flight tax
  • 8% – USA
  • 3% – Ireland
  • 2% – Germany
  • 2% – Holland

2. 78% of respondents were unaware that the Chancellor plans to increase the rate of APD (Air passenger duty) by double inflation next year

  • 84% of respondents in the South East were unaware of the plans, the highest for any region. This compares to a low of 63% of respondents in the North East.

3. When given the information that APD has increased by 325% on long haul flights and 140% for short haul flights in less than five years

  • 49% thought that APD should be reduced in the next budget
  • 29% thought that APD taxes should be frozen in the next budget
  • 6% thought that APD should be increased further at the next budget

4. 86% of respondents who had taken a flight in the last 5 years did not know how much tax they paid when they last took a flight, compared to just 14% who knew how much they had paid. 29% of respondents indicated they had not taken a flight within the last 5 years.

Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 2,039 UK adults aged 18+ from 4th to 6th July 2011. Results have been weighted to nationally representative criteria.
